How You Can Start Crushing It with AI Even If You’re Not a Techie

You are constantly more capable than you give yourself credit for. Seriously, 2024 is your year to tap into tools that can change the way you work, no matter your background. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the idea of artificial intelligence or thought it was only for tech geniuses, you’re not alone. But here’s the thing: You don’t need a coding degree or endless hours of training to start using AI in ways that make a real difference in your business.

I’ve recently been on the road, running workshops on AI implementation. At first glance, tech hubs like Silicon Valley might seem like the only place where AI magic happens. But what I’m seeing is that the biggest breakthroughs come from people who focus on using AI to solve practical problems, not just building the technology itself. Let me share a few stories from my recent workshops that might surprise you.

At one company called Fluid Logic, which builds smart hydration devices for race car drivers and workers in tough environments, I helped their team create digital assistants tailored for their daily tasks. One customer service rep, for example, was bogged down by having to sift through tons of warranty and return policy documents to answer customer questions. We built a simple AI agent that acted like her personal guide. She just inputs the customer’s question, and the AI suggests a response based on the company’s own policies, in her tone of voice. Suddenly, she was able to respond faster without second-guessing herself or hunting through manuals. She was basically a few clicks away from doubling her productivity, with zero prior AI experience beyond using ChatGPT as a fancy search engine.

Then, at a Silicon Valley workshop packed with entrepreneurs from marketing agencies to notary services, we built a fully functional AI receptionist that answers phones. I asked the room, “Who here has AI answering their calls right now?” Not a single hand went up. Then I said, “Who wants it?” Hands shot up. In just five minutes, we created a voice agent that knew all about their business and could hold a conversation. One guy joked, “Shut that down, it sounds better than me.” The point isn’t to replace you, but to amplify your reach, save you time, and let you focus on what matters most.

Here’s a powerful realization: The folks who created the AI tools aren’t always the ones who know the best way to use them. It’s like being an artist with a pencil. The pencil makers invented the tool, but the artist knows what masterpiece to create with it. So even in the heart of tech innovation, there’s huge value in learning how to apply AI to your unique business challenges.

One moment that really stuck with me happened during a break at that Silicon Valley workshop. A young woman came up to me, tears in her eyes, and asked, “Does anyone ever cry in your workshops? Because this has opened so many new doors for me.” She wasn’t just overwhelmed by AI itself, but by the sheer number of opportunities she suddenly saw within reach. The potential was right there, waiting for her to grab it.

That’s the magic of practical AI use. It’s no longer about effort for effort’s sake, but about focused impact. We’re shifting from an effort economy, where success was measured by hours logged, to an impact economy, where results matter more than grind. This means you don’t have to spend hundreds of hours trying to learn complex coding or AI theory. Instead, you put your effort into asking the right questions, experimenting with simple tools, and solving real problems.

Take the story of that young woman whose first language wasn’t English. She struggled to explain what made her business special in a sea of competition. AI helped her craft stories that connect, build trust, and show why her business stands out. It’s storytelling that wins hearts and clients, and AI can be your storytelling partner.

As the famous inventor Thomas Edison said, “There’s a way to do it better, find it.” AI is that way better tool waiting for you to explore. You just have to take that first step.

If you’re ready to see what AI can do for you, without the tech headaches, remember this: Start small. Focus on the daily tasks that eat up your time. Build your own digital helpers that answer questions, manage messages, or even pick up your calls. The possibilities are right at your fingertips, waiting to be shaped by your unique needs.
