You are closer to your biggest work than you think. The book. The offer. The system that would change everything. It is right there. It just keeps losing.
I caught myself saying something strange out loud a few weeks ago. "I need a vacation, but just to work."
Sounds backwards, right? Who dreams of getting away so they can work more?
But I wasn't talking about the everyday grind. Not the inbox. Not the fires. Not the client calls. I meant the other bucket. Dwight Eisenhower had a name for it.
"What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important."
Dwight Eisenhower said that. He ran a war and then a country by it.
That important-but-not-urgent column is where your future lives. The manuscript you keep meaning to write. The offer you keep meaning to build. The systems that would give you your time back if you ever sat down and made them. That work changes your life. And it loses every single day, because urgent always shoves important out of the room.
So here is the idea I have been playing with.
You already know two kinds of time off. A vacation, where you escape work entirely. A staycation, where you stay home, relax, and spend nothing on flights.
I am adding a third. A focuscation.
A focuscation is time away from the day-to-day, but you do not go to relax. You block off a week, cut the noise, and finish the deep work you have been deferring for months. No meetings. No errands. No quick questions. Just you and the projects that matter most. You would be surprised how much ships in one uninterrupted week.
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg made the Think Week famous, and they inspired me to try it. I would check into a hotel with a stack of books and just think. It helped. But a Think Week is input. Reading, studying, reflecting. A focuscation is output. You go there to build.
Three Rules for Your Own Focuscation
Want to take one? Keep it simple. Three rules.
First, pick the outcome before you pick the dates. Walk in with a clear intention. "When this week ends, X will exist." A finished course. A launched offer. A written manuscript. If you cannot name the deliverable, you are just booking a quiet room to check email in.
Second, go somewhere a little boring. This feels counterintuitive, but do not pick a place that pulls at you. No sightseeing. No resort amenities you feel obligated to use because you paid for them. You want an environment that removes distraction, not one that adds it. A plain city hotel beats a beach villa for this.
Third, block five days minimum. A weekend will not get you into deep work and out the other side with something real. Put it on the calendar like a client engagement, because that is what it is. You are the client.
Let Your AI Do the Sorting
Here is where most people stall. Everything feels important. You show up with a dozen things that all need to get done, and you burn the first two days sorting the pile instead of building.
So do the sorting before you leave, and let your AI agent handle it.
Hand your assistant the real data. Your to-do list. Your inbox. Your calendar. Your recent conversations. Then ask it to organize everything into an Eisenhower matrix and name the one important-but-not-urgent item with the highest upside. Ask it what it can draft or outline right now so you walk in with a head start. Ask it what it can take off your plate entirely while you are gone, the follow-ups, the scheduling, the recurring busywork you still do by hand.
Now you arrive on day one with a clear plan and a clear head. That is the whole game. Simplify what matters, automate what does not, and protect the time to build.
Your important work does not need more hours in your normal week. Those hours are already spoken for. It needs a room, a deadline, and permission to ignore everything else for five days.
If you have been kicking your own cans down the road, this is your nudge.
This week on King Moves, Justin and I break down all three kinds of time away, the health week, the think week, and the focuscation, and why you need different kinds of rest for different parts of your life. Listen to the full episode here, then go book your focuscation.
Stop playing life on hard mode. Automate your success.
